NORTHAMPTON September 5th

84 Tom Harris took the opening heat with 4 Dan Johnson in second after 428 Richard Regan and then 141 Carl Pickering had set the early pace.  Heat two went to 259 Paul Hines who passed 197 Ryan Harrison with five to run, Ryan taking second.  It came right for Carl Pickering in the consolation, he won by a big margin from Richard Regan.

The meeting final provided a bizarre and close finish.  Paul Hines had taken the lead from Carl Pickering just past half way, 55 Craig Finnikin moved into second before a last bend challenge on the leader saw his front wheel tangled in Paul’s bumper and the pair crossed the line tangled together.  Tom Harris was third.GN race went to 37 Chris Cowley with Dutchman H007 Dave Schaap second

COVENTRY September 4th

Congratulations to Andrew Smith who successfully defended his World Title and in doing so joined just two other drivers who scored three consecutive wins.  The race had to be re-started after a first bend pile up which saw 4 Dan Johnson roll.  On the re-start 259 Paul Hines was first around turn one but Andrew had found a way past to lead at the end of lap one.  Andrew’s biggest challenger throughout the race was Dutchman 217 Ron Kroonder who ran second for a long spell.  Around three quarter distance Andrew had a scare when he momentarily tangled with a back marker, he was delayed sufficiently for Ron to take the lead but Andrew was back ahead by the end of the lap.  Ron faded then and was passed by 515 Frankie Wainman and 55 Craig Finnikin who took second and third with Ron placing fourth.

The meeting opened with the consolation semi-final race where the last two places on the World Final grid were on offer.  198 Nigel Whalley was the winner of this, although he worked hard for victory as four times during the race he was passed by other drivers but each time Nigel fought back to regain the lead.  Runner up was 21 Mark Gilbank.

The UK heat went to 416 Dave Muckian who took the lead from 238 Richard Bryan around half distance.  3291 Dan Squire finished second.  The heat for Dutch drivers went to H477 Martijn Oudhuis who led from lap six after H60 Henk Maris had led the opening laps, Henk placing second at the flag.  The first consolation event was won by 415 Russell Cooper who led throughout with the second one going to Mark Gilbank who took the lead with three to run from 13 Andy Ford.

Russell Cooper opened up a big lead in the meeting final but had to pull off with overheating problems at a mid race caution.  This left 98 Les Spencer ahead but a fast moving Dan Johnson went by him with three to run on his way to victory and Les was relegated to third by 515 Frankie Wainman on the last bend.  The meeting finished with the Grand National.  457 Scott Chambers was the early leader before 446 Joe Booth took over.  Mark Gilbank was chasing hard, eventually overcoming Joe with a well times hit on the last bend, Joe hanging on for second.

BELLE VUE August 30th

A good Bank Holiday crowd witnessed an excellent meeting which included two drivers from New Zealand and one from Australia who all gave a good account of themselves.  NZ58 Peter Bengston led heat one for a number of laps but was overhauled by 84 Tom Harris around half distance.  Tom went on to win from 55 Craig Finnikin.  White top 238 Richard Bryan put in a sterling drive in heat two, he led for over half the race and when passed by 4 Dan Johnson did not give in and successfully challenged Dan to regain the lead briefly.  1 Andrew Smith then appeared on the scene and was swiftly past both of them, going on to take the flag with Dan second and Richard third.  Richard also led for a long spell in heat three, this time it was Craig Finnikin who got the better of him in a race that was stopped on the last lap after a roll over by 91 Tony Smith.  Craig took the victory with Dan Johnson second.

Final time and it was 111 Mike Williamson who led hem away, Mike kept his advantage until lap thirteen when he was passed by a group of star men, headed by Andrew Smith.  It was Andrew still there at the chequered, Dan Johnson recorded his third runner up spot of the day and Tom Harris finished third.  NZ52 Scott Joblin was the early leader in the Grand National, 191 Josh Smith, 462 Scott Davids and Craig Finnikin all had turns in the lead until 515 Frankie Wainman hit the front on lap eleven.  Tom Harris found a way past next time round but Frankie regained the lead on the next lap and that is how they stayed to the flag.

BIRMINGHAM August 28th

The meeting opened with the Under 25’s Championship race.  This was won in fine style by 84 Tom Harris.  First to show was 397 Stuart Smith but he was passed by 488 Mike Kingston on lap four.  Tom was making good progress and was up to third at this point.  He passed Mike two laps later and raced away into a commanding lead.  4 Dan Johnson and 16 Matt Newson moved to second and third in the closing stages and that’s how they finished.

Heat two looked to heading for a win for 253 Robert Braithwaite in only his second meeting.  He was chased down by 153 James Lund and crashed out under pressure.  390 Stuart Smith passed James at the start of the last lap before taking the flag ahead of 515 Frankie Wainman.  World Champion 1 Andrew Smith had suffered a puncture in his heat and was forced to race in the consolation which he won.  It took him until the last bend to catch and pass long time leader Robert Braithwaite but this time Rob held on for second.

There were several leaders in the final before 107 Lee Robinson moved ahead with five laps to run.  259 Paul Hines moved up to second but in a chaotic last lap he was relegated down the order as Stuart Smith finished second behind Lee Robinson with 37 Chris Cowley in third.

The last race of the evening had another good performance from Robert Braithwaite, he led until four to go when he was passed by James Lund who went on to win with Chris Cowley the runner up.

NORTHAMPTON August 21st

464 Luke Davidson was in top form for the first two heats.  In heat one he was ahead after just six laps, going on to win from 55 Craig Finnikin in second.  143 Adam Bamford and 195 Dean Whitwell were the early leaders in heat two before 51 Dylan Williams-Maynard took over. Luke was on a charge again though, taking the lead with five to run and the flag with 107 Lee Robinson in second.  In heat three Adam Bamford led until almost half distance when 1 Andrew Smith went by.  The World Champion went on to win comfortably.  There was a good battle for second spot between Lee Robinson, Craig Finnikin and 259 Paul Hines with Lee taking the place.

Adam Bamford was first to show in the final but was passed by 488 Mike Kingston on lap six.  Lee Robinson moved ahead briefly but just before half way Andrew Smith hit the front and romped away to the flag with Lee Robinson second and Tom Harris third.  390 Stuart Smith was first across the line in the GN race but failed post race scrutineering, handing the win to Tom Harris with Andrew Smith placing second from the lap handicap.

COVENTRY August 7th

NORTHAMPTON July 18th National Points Series Round 30

The first race of the day was for the European Championship.   51 Dylan Williams-Maynard led them away with Colin Goodswen tucked in behind.    Dylan continued to lead as 153 James Lund moved up to second on lap eight.  Luke Davidson moved into second just before half distance and set about chasing the leader, whom he eventually caught and passed on lap eighteen.  Luke could not relax for a moment as  Andrew Smith moved up to second with James Lund being in third whilst Dylan was spun out in heavy traffic.  Andrew could not get near enough to mount a challenge so the title went to Luke, Andrew second and a late charge from 37 Chris Cowley saw him finish in third spot.

Dylan made no mistake in heat one, leading from start to finish to record his first ever victory with Andrew Smith the runner up.  Heat two had Netherlands visitor 365 Joep Hendricks ahead with 105 Chris Bonner in second for much of the race.  Chris found a way past late on to take the win, 60 Ian Venables also got through in second with the Dutchman the third driver home.  The consolation had a number of leaders before 305 Carlos Perez moved ahead with five to run.  Chris Cowley went second before executing a last bender on the 305 car which saw both cars cross the line side by side, Carlos just getting the verdict.

The final saw another flag to flag win for Dylan Williams-Maynard.  Ian Venables chased him for much of the race without success and when Andrew Smith moved into second with four to run he was too far adrift to make the challenge.  84 Tom Harris took third.  Ian Venables showed well in the Grand National but the new Euro Champ Luke Davidson  was moving well, passing Ian on lap ten before taking the flag with Ian hanging on for second.

NORTHAMPTON July 17th National Points Series Round 29

Day one of the European weekend featured 54 cars including three drivers from Holland.  Heat 1 featured 23 cars, and was lead by yellow top 141 Carl Pickering  who’s car seems suited to the tarmac here he was eventually overcome by a fast charging 84 Tom Harris on the last bend. Special mention must go to white grader 488 Mike Kingston jnr who followed up his first win last weekend by finishing 4th in this race. Ht 2 featured 31 cars and it required a complete restart as there was an incident with 280 Colin Nairn but everything was okay with the driver. This race victory, his first ever,  went to 372 Colin Goodswen who took over the lead very early on and in second was  H482 Peter Van Den Bosch with 4 Daniel Johnson being the first of the superstars home. The consolation was all about the yellow grade as they filled the first 4 places with 347 Steve Hopkins taking the win from 60 Ian Venables in second and 191 Joshua Smith in third.

All 32 cars made it on track for the Final but this was stopped early on for a rollover to 41 Robert Broome he hit the banking/tyres going into turn 3 and went up and over, thankfully he was uninjured in the incident. The win went to 1 Andrew Smith from 37 Chris Cowley in second and 515 Frankie Wainman Junior in third.  The Grand National rounded off a good nights racing and was won by 464 Luke Davidson who had obviously found the right setup for the car for what was to follow the following day……..

Day Two of the speed weekend was another great day of racing in the Summer sun.

Heat 1 started with 21 cars and there was action early on with 91 Tony Smith and 462 Scott Davids colliding on the first lap, there was also a caution for 393 Dave Plumbley who collided with the Armco. The race was won by 347 Steve Hopkins who won the same race the previous day.

22 cars took part in Heat 2, and this was won by another yellow top 191 Joshua Smith who took over at the front early on in the race and went on to a comfortable win.

Heat 3 was another victory for 191 Joshua Smith who used his mini stox experience to his advantage as 259 Paul Hines was breathing down on his back bumper on the last lap but Josh braked heavy into the turn and this resulted in Paul being unable to move him and he went on to take his Second Victory.

The Final saw 28 cars take part and was another fast and frenzied affair with a stoppage early on when there was a stray tyre on track when there was a coming together and 445 Dick Gladden lost a tyre and tube. 60 Ian Venables led for a long time but was only overcome by eventual winner Paul Hines, 84 Tom Harris was third. The Grand National rounded off a excellent weekends racing and was won by 464 Luke Davidson from long time leader white top 488 Mike Kingston Jnr.

21 cars took part in Heat 2, where there was a caution on lap 3 for 212 Danny Wainman who was facing the wrong way on the home straight. On the restart 84 Tom Harris was well into his stride and went on to win.

Heat 3 was all about white top 488 Mike Kingston Jnr. He lead from start to finish and although the cars of 84 Tom Harris and 16 Matt Newson were closing in on him they could not catch him.

The Final saw 30 cars take part and was a fast and frenzied affair with a stoppage early on when 197 Ryan Harrison went into the Armco hard. The victory went to 84 Tom Harris who won from 217 Lee Fairhurst and Dan Johnson.

The Grand National rounded off a good nights racing with Matt Newson as the race winner.

COVENTRY July 3rd National Points Series Round 26

The meeting opened with the race for the Golden Helmet.  84 Tom Harris took a well deserved victory in this.  He was chased hard by 21 Mark Gilbank, the bumper going in on every bend and in fact Mark go ahead briefly but Tom came back and regained his lead.   Tom then had a bit of breathing pace and 4 Dan Johnson challenged Mark for second.  The pair had a good battle with Dan going second in the closing stages.

Heat one saw a first ever win for former F2 racer 416 Dave Muckian.  Dave passed early leader 111 Mike Williamson on lap six and took the flag ahead of 35 Neil Shenton.    235 John Weldon led off heat two but 337 Dave Willis was soon past him.  73 Rob Cowley ran second for much of the race and was involved with 16 Matt Newson and 197 Ryan Harrison in the tussle for second which Matt eventually claimed.  215 Geoff Nickolls won heat three, he moved ahead just past half way and won with 12 Michael Scriven in second.  415 Russell Cooper was making his first appearance of the season but when he caught and passed the early front runners Mike Williamson and 496 Neil Holcroft he pulled away to win comfortably.

The Final was action packed and full of incident.  362 Lionel Shaw led them off before being passed by Dave Muckian on lap six.  Dave looked to be heading for the win but was closed down and passed by 322 James Neachell with five to run.  Dan Johnson also passed Dave and across the finishing line it was James, Dan & Dave.  James was then docked two places for jumping the start and subsequently disqualified for failing to attend post race scrutineering.  Thus Dan Johnson took the honours, Dave Muckian finished an excellent second and 53 John Lund was third.

There were several leaders in the early part of the Grand National event before 55 Craig Finnikin took the lead just before half distance.  Tom Harris moved into second soon afterwards but could make no impression on Craig’s lead and that is how they stayed.

BELLE VUE June 27th National Points Series Round 25

The opening heat went to 158 James Clement who led from the second lap.  Andrew Smith was closing late on but James held on to win.  Heat two also looked to be going the way of a yellow top driver as 276 Mark Poole led for much of the distance.  4 Dan Johnson had other ideas though, catching and passing the leader on turn one of the last lap and taking the flag with Mark second.  The consolation saw a comfortable win for 2 Paul Harrison.  He passed leader 424 Mike Heywood just after half distance and took the flag well clear of second placed 321 Ed Neachell.

111 Mike Williamson was the early leader in the final but 13 Andy Ford was soon ahead with 446 Joe Booth close behind.  Andy retired with a flat tyre on lap ten leaving Joe ahead from 335 Mark Woodhull.  Craig Finnikin and Andrew Smith took up the chase late on but neither could make any impression on the 446 car so Joe took the win from Craig and Andrew.  Andrew was the winner of the Grand National, it took him until two laps to run to catch leader 76 Lee Smith before taking the flag with Ed Neachell in second.

KINGS LYNN  June 26th National Points Series Round 24

The top man at King’s Lynn was 197 Ryan Harrison who took victories in heat and final.  55 Craig Finnikin ran him close after a third place and three runner up spots.  The meeting opened with a white and yellow, which is the usual start at the Norfolk Arena.  This was won by 2009 Novice of the Year 192 Luke Dennis with local man 441 John Lawn in second.  Heat one went to 288 Simon Panton from Craig Finnikin with the second heat being won by Ryan Harrison from 215 Geoff Nickolls.  212 Danny Wainman performed a spectacular roll in this one and although the car was extensively damaged thankfully Danny walked away unhurt

There was controversy in the final when the track was watered during a late race caution.  Ryan Harrison was the leader with Craig Finnikin second and 84 Tom Harris third.  Both Craig and Tom were adamant that they would have caught Ryan over the closing laps had the watering not taken place but the result stayed the same as it had been at the caution.  World Champion 1 Andrew Smith rounded things off with a win in the last race of the evening with Craig Finnikin again second.

NORTHAMPTON June 20th National Points Series Round 23

In stark contrast to Ipswich the sun shone all afternoon at Northampton.    73 Rob Cowley won heat one after 460 Chris Cooke had led for much of the race, 217 Lee Fairhurst finished second.   84 Tom Harris recorded a comfortable victory in heat two, he moved ahead before half distance and was well clear of 429 Gareth Wildman at the flag.  295 Wesley Goodwin led the consolation from flag to flag.  41 Robert Broome was close behind the whole race but could not mount a challenge.

The meeting final had to be re-started after a spectacular roll by 191 Josh Smith on lap one.  460 Chris Cooke and Gareth Wildman were the early pacesetters but Tom Harris was on top form.  He took the lead on lap eight, around the same time World Champion 1 Andrew Smith moved into second but Tom made no mistakes and kept a good distance between him and the number 1 r.  Tom the winner, Andrew second and a good drive from 498 Spencer Taylor saw him home in third.  The Grand National was all action.  Spencer Taylor moved ahead early on chased by 464 Luke Davidson.  Luke passed Spencer with five to run but Spencer was not in the mood to concede and he regained the lead on the next lap.  37 Chris Cowley and Andrew Smith joined the mix over the last few laps and it was anybody’s race from these four.   Experience told in the end as Andrew took the flag with Chris in second.

IPSWICH June 19th National Points Series Round 22

The weather was unkind for the only visit of the year to Foxhall for the F1’s with plenty rain coming down.  197 Ryan Harrison took the opening heat with 12 Michael Scriven in second.  The second heat went to 295 Wesley Goodwin from Netherlands visitor 482 Peter van den Bosch.  Local driver 372 Colin Goodswen was first past the flag but he failed post race scrutineering handing the win to 107 Lee Robinson.  European Champion 217 Lee Fairhurst finished second.

The final provided a close finish with Lee Robinson, 105 Chris Bonner and 321 Ed Neachell crossing the line almost side by side.  Chris failed the post race scrutineering meaning the top three were Lee Robinson, Ed Neachell and  Michael Scriven.  The Grand National provided a Wainman 1-2, 515 Frankie was first with younger brother 212 Danny the runner up.

COVENTRY June 5th National Points Series Round 21

The meeting opened with the Trust Fund Red Top race which was led from start to finish by 321 Ed Neachell.  There was plenty going on behind him, 462 Scott Davids ran second for much of the race and was involved in a good battle with 84 Tom Harris as they fought to gain the right to challenge the leader.  By the time Tom found a way past in the closing stages Ed was well clear and that is how they finished.  Good to see Dave Nickolls, who was badly injured at Coventry in November  2009, on hand to assist with the presentations.

Heat one for whites & yellows went to 215 Geoff Nickolls.  The early leader was 416 Dave Muckian but he lost his advantage when there was a caution after a roll by 41 Robert Broome.  Geoff was on hand to take the lead shortly afterwards and then the flag with 158 James Clement in second.  362 Lionel Shaw led the opening laps of heat two when 306 Ian Noden went by.  97 Murray Harrison was moving quickly through the field, shadowed by 1 Andrew Smith.  Murray took the lead on lap twelve, Andrew put in a last bend hit and the cars powered down the home straight side by side with Murray just getting the verdict.  235 John Weldon led the first half of heat three, 335 Mark Woodhull passed him at this point before taking the win with 55 Craig Finnikin going second late in the race.  The consolation had numerous leaders but at the end it was Tom Harris with the win from 197 Ryan Harrison.

98 Les Spencer led the final for the first nine laps and then 338 Chris Brocksopp took over.  16 Matt Newson was going well in his new car and he hit the front just past half distance.  Matt took the victory with Tom Harris runner up and Chris Brocksopp in third.  380 Steven Cayzer and Mark Woodhull led most of the GN but 515 Frankie Wainman was on a mission, he gradually reeled in the 335 car before going ahead on the last lap, Mark hanging on for second.

55 Craig Finnikin was the top man on Bank Holiday Monday with heat and final victories plus a sixth place in the GN from the handicap.  463 James Morris took the opening heat, passing long time leader 76 Lee Smith in the closing stages, 53 John Lund was second.  446 Joe Booth took the lead before half distance and won heat two comfortably with John Lund again the runner up.  Craig Finnikin moved ahead with four to run in heat three after 158 James Clement and 84 Tom Harris had led earlier.  515 Frankie Wainman finished second.

James Clement showed strongly in the final until Craig Finnikin found a way past around half distance.  Craig went on to take the flag with 1 Andrew Smith second and Frankie Wainman third.  It was a lively race, packed with incident and only 7 of the 24 starters completed race distance.  Tom Harris won the last race of the night, he passed leader James Clement on lap six before himself being passed by Frankie Wainman with five to run.  On the next lap Tom put in a big hit on Frankie which saw the 515 car sidelined and Tom on his way to victory with 4 Dan Johnson claiming the runner up spot.

KINGS LYNN  May 29th  National Points Series Round 19

It definitely wasn’t the hottest day of the year at the Norfolk Arena. The meeting started with a Whites & Yellows Stars of Tomorrow race, which was won by local man 441 John Lawn. Second was 362 Lionel Shaw and 3rd was 337 Dave Willis. Another yellow graded driver won Heat 1 – 215 Geoff Knickolls and Stars of Tomorrow winner John Lawn was second. 3rd was 337 Dave Willis. 23 cars were on track for Heat 2 and it was 390 Stuart Smith and 212 Danny Wainman who were battling each other. Danny came through when Stuart went wide to get 6th place, a fantastic battle. But it was 198 Nigel Whalley who was the winner, with 13 Andy Ford second and 338 Chris Brocksopp 3rd. The rain came down during the Consolation, which was won by 515 Frankie Wainman after catching 462 Scott Davids, who lead the first half of the race.

All 30 qualifiers came out for the final. It looked like it was going to be 288 Simon Panton who was going to be the winner but fan’s favourite and 8 times World Championship winner 53 John Lund came through on the last lap. 84 Tom Harris was second and Simon Panton was 3rd. Further back the field, 515 Frankie Wainman was battling 1 Andy Smith. Andy did a last bender on Frankie but it went wrong as Andy dropped back 2 places.  Frankie crossed the line in 7th place and Andy 9th. A brilliant race. The Grand National was won by 1 Andy Smith, second 21 Mark Gilbank and 390 Stuart Smith. The track coped well with the wet conditions.

SKEGNESS May 9th National Points Series Round 14

The first of the 2010 titles, the UK Open went to 385 Steve Thompson.  He started the race on pole position and led throughout.  A race caution with four laps to run closed up the field but Steve was fortunate to have three lap down cars between him and second placed 484 Craig Utley. When the green dropped on the restart Steve pulled away and although 84 Tom Harris passed the 484 car he was never going to catch the leader over the remaining distance.  Tom finished runner up with 1 Andrew Smith in third

Steve had earlier won his two qualifying heats with ease, heading home 247 Gary Castell in his first and 259 Paul Hines in his second.  The other heats went to 37 Chris Cowley who passed early leader Craig Utley around half distance, Craig coming home second.  Craig made no mistake in his second outing, passing long time leader 429 Gareth Wildman with four to run.  498 Spencer Taylor took second.  In the last chance race Gareth was first across the line but failed post race scrutineering, handing the win to 2 Paul Harrison with 214 Adam Slater in second

COVENTRY May 2nd  National Points Series Round 11

A different meeting format was used for this one which seemed to work quite well.  Heat one was for white & yellow grade drivers only.  330 Graham Wagstaff led from lap four until two to run when he was passed by 306 Ian Noden.  Ian took the flag  but was disqualified for a post race infringement, handing the win to Graham and elevating 76 Lee Smith to second.  Ian made no mistake in heat two, he led for most of the race after 101 Dave Waterhouse had led the opening laps.  Ian took the flag with 55 Craig Finnikin the runner up.  The third heat went to 4 Dan Johnson who passed long time leader 13 Andy Ford with two laps to run, Andy hanging on for second.  121 Kevin Shinn led for much of the first half of the consolation event but was passed by eventual winner 197 Ryan Harrison on lap nine.

In the meeting final Kevin led  a hectic race from start to finish to record his first ever grand final win with 244 Mick Rogers in second, some distance behind and World Champion Andrew Smith in third.  496 Neil Holcroft led them away in the GN race which had a caution following a roll over by 105 Chris Bonner on lap five.  97 Murray Harrison moved ahead soon after the restart and scored a convincing win from 84 Tom Harris in second.
